If you open a bathroom cabinet in a Korean flat, you will not find the ten-step routine. You will find four or five things that get used every single day, and most of them cost less than a coffee.
The scrub towel
The rough green cloth — ittaeri — is the first thing anyone points at. It is used once a week, not daily, and always on skin that has been sitting in hot water for twenty minutes first. Used dry, it is just sandpaper.
The tub of balm
A small aluminium tin of menthol balm sits somewhere near the sink in most homes. Stiff neck, blocked nose, a long day standing — it gets reached for more often than any cream.
What is not there
Very little packaging. Korean bathrooms are small and usually wet all over, so nothing sits out that cannot handle being splashed. Things live in drawers, and the shelf holds only what is used that week.
